John and I were on holiday last week in Northumbria, a part of the country I’ve grown to love. The most gorgeous unspoilt beaches with hardly a person in sight. Have a look at my pictures on flickr. I was anxious to get down the allotment on our return, but it rained all day Sunday. Though at least I knew it was getting a good watering. So I popped down yesterday, relieved to find everything growing well, including the weeds!
The sweet peas are pushing out flowers like there’s no tomorrow. These are called Blue Velvet, though as you can see they’re more of a dark purple colour. Beautiful all the same, and they smell lovely, especially when arranged with a few sprigs of fennel. They brighten up my office desk no end!
I can see my time on the allotment this summer will involve a lot of weeding, thinning and tying stems in to supports. I was hoping to be harvesting the swift early potatoes by now, but there’s no sign of flowers yet. Not sure what’s taking them so long?
